Powerful contemporary drama for readers aged 12+

Escape to Cornwall with What the World Doesn't See by Mel Darbon, which comes with an accompanying activity pack, which we created for Parrot Street Book Club subscribers in May 2023.

“This is a story packed with empathy and relatable characters. It's about giving a voice to young people, empowering them to stand up for themselves and others, often against the odds. We loved it and we think our tween and teen readers will too.

Maudie and Jake's family is falling to pieces - their mum's been struggling with her grief since they lost Dad and one night she vanishes. When Jake is put into care, Maudie can't take it any more. She comes up with a wild plan to pull their family back together - by kidnapping Jake. On the run in Cornwall, Jake and Maudie each find something they hadn't expected - freedom and love. But can they find Mum and a way to heal together? A tender and insightful novel about grief and disability, getting lost and finding yourself.

Mel Darbon has worked as a theatre designer and freelance artist, as well as teaching young adults with learning disabilities and running creative workshops for teenage mums, young offenders and toddlers. She is a graduate of Bath Spa's MA in Writing for Young People and her first book, Rosie Loves Jack, was selected for World Book Night.

The activity pack includes stickers, book club-style questions to ponder and a welcome note from Mel Darbon. There’s also a word puzzle to solve and a recipe for rock cakes to enjoy, alongside jokes and further reading recommendations.

Activity packs are a handy A5 size and printed on uncoated paper which is fully recyclable.
