Create a jungle collage

Finished jungle collage scene in a bright yellow frame
You will need:
  • Two pieces of paper the same size (we used A5)
  • Assorted coloured papers, magazine cuttings etc
  • Scissors
  • Glue
Assorted papers in green and brown shades

1. Start by gathering together an assortment of coloured paper, predominantly in shades of green and brown.

Assorted sizes, shapes and colours of leaf cut from the papers

2. Cut the papers into an assortment of leaf and branch shapes. Don't worry about each leaf being perfect, just spend some time creating lots of different shapes and sizes.

Arranging the leaves onto the collage

3. Start to arrange the leaves onto one of your pieces of paper. Broadly speaking, you will want the larger leaves near the bottom and the smaller ones at the top (so that they look further away).

4. Once you're happy with your general arrangement of colours, shapes and textures,  work methodically to stick the leaves to the paper. We chose to fold some of the leaves to give extra texture. We also chose to leave parts unstuck so they lifted from the paper and overlapped the edges.

Two yellow paper butterflies

5. To make your collage pop it's fun to add some splashes of a brighter colour. We chose to cut out two butterflies (folding the paper before cutting to get two identical halves) but you may want to make flowers or other animals.

6. Stick your colourful elements onto the collage. Again, we chose to only stick one wing of each butterfly so that they didn't lie completely flat on the paper.

Cutting a contrasting frame for the collage

7. Finally, take the second piece of paper and fold it in half without creasing. Keeping the edges lined up by holding them firmly, cut around the three unfolded edges in order to remove the centre of the paper and create a frame.

8. Stick the frame onto the collage. You may choose to encase the entire collage or have some leaves overflowing the frame as we did.
