Gripping dystopian mystery for readers aged 12+

Older readers will be thrilled and intrigued by The Raven's Song by Zana Fraillon and Bren MacDibble, which comes with an accompanying activity pack, which we created for Parrot Street Book Club subscribers in September 2023.

When The Raven's Song first landed on our desks a few months ago, we knew instantly it was going to be perfect for our Macaw boxes. It is packed with fantastic characters and thrilling twists and turns. The setting is so vividly drawn - we loved it!

~Sarah

In a near-future world impacted by climate change and a devastating pandemic, infected children are being cryogenically frozen to give the government enough time to find a cure that will save them. Each child has a box put together for them with all their favourite things. Among the infected children is Phoenix – his box contains a seed journal as well as a collection of letters to no one. One hundred years in the future, in a post-pandemic, post-pollution, post-city world, Shelby finds the forgotten children in an abandoned city when she ventures out from her rural egg farm. The batteries are degenerating, and the children will die unless she wakes them. But when Phoenix is awoken, danger returns. The children will have to work together to locate a cure, and find a way to a better future.

Bren MacDibble is the author of several books for young people and has been nominated for the Carnegie Medal, awarded Australian Children's Book of the year, and New Zealand Children's Book of the Year, amongst many other accolades. Her books are set in climate changed worlds for those curious about the future.

Melbourne-based Zana Fraillon is an internationally-acclaimed award-winning author of books for young readers, including The Bone Sparrow, which was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and won the Amnesty CILIP Honour Award, and The Lost Soul Atlas, nominated for the 2021 Carnegie Medal.

The activity pack includes stickers, book club-style questions to ponder and a welcome note from Zana Fraillon and Bren MacDibble. There’s also a runic brain teaser to solve and a recipe for eggy muffins to enjoy, alongside jokes and further reading recommendations.

Activity packs are a handy A5 size and printed on uncoated paper which is fully recyclable.
