An interview with Shoo Rayner, author of Walker

Screengrab of Shoo Rayner video interview

If you have been following us on our social media channels, you will already know how much we love our office dog, Lenny – he’s an integral part of the team. When Walker by Shoo Rayner landed on our desks a few months ago, there was no way we couldn’t choose it for our April boxes! This month our Parakeet subscribers have been getting to know the extensive cast of brilliant pooches in Shoo’s book. We challenge them to choose a favourite – we certainly couldn’t!

Shoo kindly agreed to answer a few questions for us and, even better, recorded his answers in this video. Click here to find out what inspired Walker, where he wrote it, and who his favourite canine character in the book is.

So many of our favourite children’s books star heroic animals. Creating animal characters with human features and personality traits offers authors a way of exploring difficult situations and some of the insecurities kids feel themselves in a way that is relatable but not too serious. We’ve got some more brilliant animals coming up in future Parrot Street book selections. And if you’re looking for more recommendations, check out our blog post on our favourite books starring animal heroes.
