What inspired you to write The Merry Christmas Murders?

When my publisher asked if I wanted to write a middle grade Christmas mystery, I immediately thought of having a main character who was, like me, an autistic ADHDer. I also really wanted her to have neurodivergent friends, and then thought of Robyn and the other members of the Neurokind Club. Basically, I wanted her to belong in a way I didn’t when I was her age.

Which character was the most fun to write and why

That is such a tough question! I love them all but the most fun to write is probably Nisha as she is so funny, observant and wry.

What would you say Brooke learns about friendship?

Brooke learns that good, true friendship is as much about overcoming challenges and conflicts together as it is about laughter and joy. She also learns that there was nothing wrong with her before she had friends, she just hadn’t met the right ones.

What message would like young readers to take away from the book?

I’d love young readers to think about and focus on their unique strengths and skills. I wish I had done that when I was younger rather than trying to fit into a gingerbread cookie cutter mould of a perfect kid.

Can you tell us anything about what the future holds for Brooke and her friends?

Brooke and the Neurokind Club will be solving more mysteries together, and will definitely be back next year in The Jingle Bell Murders!

Do you have a favourite place to write?

I love writing with a view. I’m lucky enough to live on the coast, within walking distance of the sea, so in the early stages of a book, I go to seafront cafes to plan and write. When I’m further in, though, I’m in my writing room: door locked, music on, head down – lost in words.

Why did you choose to write books for this age group?

Middle grade books can do everything – they contain darkness, light, comedy and tragedy, adventure and magic: everything and anything is possible! I love that so much.

Which other middle grade murder mysteries would you recommend our subscribers read next?

I love Elly Griffiths’ A Girl Called Justice series, the Montgomery Bonbon books by Alasdair Beckett-King, and, of course, everything by Robin Stevens!
