Play our favourite memory game

The book we sent our Cockatoos this month had us thinking about the brain and our memories. So we thought it would be a bit of fun to share one of our favourite memory games.

Kim’s Game is fun for all the family at any time of year but can work especially well when you’re stuck inside in the cold winter months and want something quick and easy to keep everyone entertained. Geekily, we also love that the game is named after the hero in Rudyard Kipling’s novel Kim who plays the game in the story!

Play Kim's Game

1. Collect 10-20 objects (10 objects is probably enough for younger children) from around the house and lay them on a tray.

2. Each player needs to study what’s on the tray and try to remember each item but there’s a time limit. Set a timer for 1 minute and at the end of that time cover or remove the tray.

3. The winner of the game is the person who’s able to remember the most items. You can decide whether every player secretly writes down each item they can remember and their sheet is marked at the end, or whether players simply take it in turns to name an object.

4. As an alternative, after studying the tray for a minute one item could be secretly removed. The winner would be the first person to correctly identify which item is missing!
